Its unfortunate that Illustrator has changed the locations and keyboard shortcuts for many of your tools, I am stopping constantly to search for them as they do not work they way you suggest (W does bring up the blend tool however I have to search through the Object tab to find the blend options menu). The blend options with the squares does not work (14:58) with my newer version of Illustrator.

how do people make an entire illustration with this effect? I'm using just the normal noise texture and it doesn't get the same result, but i can't imagine making a whole piece only editing the gradient through the mask
